This elegant tea tray from the late 19th century owes its decorative appeal to the warm coloring and beautiful grain of northern elm (yumu). Once used to serve tea or hold scholarly implements, the shallow tray is minimally decorated, enclosed by a square frame carved with ridged sides and a finely beaded edge. Dovetail joinery at the corners adds charming detail to the simple form.
