Named for their half moon shape, demi-lune tables such as this were designed to sit against a wall, displaying precious objects, flowers and porcelains. Crafted in 19th-century China, this pair of demi-lunes features table tops darkened with black lacquer in contrast to the warm red lacquer coloring the aprons and hoof feet legs.
The aprons are comprised of double stretcher bars linked by small gilt carvings of handled baskets filled with peony blossoms. The two tables push together to form a large, round center table or can be kept separate as versatile side tables. The pair’s smooth patina was earned over a lifetime of use, resulting in subdued color and fantastic character.
