This early 20th century lattice window panel from China’s Shanxi province likely originated in a traditional home with balanced interiors. Both functional and decorative, lattice windows allowed for fresh air and light to flow into a room while still maintaining privacy. Assembled by joining long strips of carved wood, this lattice window has an even, grid-like pattern set within a square frame. Carefully placed diagonals interrupt the grid with cross formations, adding intrigue to the otherwise simple design.
