Over 300 years ago, in the early Qing dynasty, a furniture maker in China’s Hebei province was commissioned in to construct this exquisitely proportioned wine table. A tradition dating back for centuries, wine tables such as this were used at social gatherings as a spot to converse, sip wine and make toasts. Characters carved into this table’s underside record the name of the person for whom it was made. They literally translate as: “to broaden to develop to evolve into more beautiful and colorful.”
