This 19th-century presentation box is elevated with contemporary steel legs as an unexpected side table or nightstand. The box is crafted from fragrant pine wood and cloaked in a layer of dark brown lacquer. Carved into the lid is the fú character for “good fortune,” displayed during the Lunar New Year as a blessing for good luck and prosperity. The large character is carved with painterly flourish and colored with celebratory red and gold pigments. Originally used for presenting New Year’s gifts, the box is now an elegant hiding place for household clutter.
