“Reflections VIII” is an original lithograph by twentieth century artist Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011).
Helen Frankenthaler had a significant impact on the mid-twentieth century art world and a trail blazer in modern print-making beginning with her earliest lithographs in 1961. She adapted the approach she used with paint and canvas to the materials of ink, paper and stone to continue lines and fields of color and pushed boundaries without predetermined ideas and celebrated a process of sensation
Her liberated approach is echoed in the pools of printing ink in “Reflections VIII”, which seems to simply flow wherever the surface of the paper permitted without the guidance of the artist’s hand. Every print she made is a visual language that is abstract and realistic, free and controlled, capable of creating deep imaginative space. Fusing foreground and background color and plane, Frankenthaler’s “soak stain” technique creates a sense of space that piques the imagination to look deeper into the picture plane and to see the image as both whole and fragment.
