Vintage Design
The Italian Sputnik chandelier from the circa 1950s -1960s showcases the futuristic aesthetic that was popular during the mid-century modern era and was most likely manufactured by Stilnovo (certain technical solutions and the general look, no sticker has been preserved though). This particular chandelier features a black powder-coated structure, which gives it a sleek and modern look while also providing durability and resistance to wear. The black powder coating contrasts elegantly with brass details, and use of those two materials is one of the hallmarks of Stilnovo designs, alongside geometrically shaped brass elements.
The chandelier is composed of 10 cylindrical lampshades, made from opaline glass, a semi-translucent material known for its milky, soft glow. These shades help diffuse the light, creating a warm, ambient atmosphere. The shades are mounted on the arms with intricately designed brass screws.
Its overall design draws inspiration from the Sputnik satellite, with its radial symmetry and “bursting” shape. The chandelier’s arms radiate outward from a central point, evoking a sense of movement and dynamism.
Despite the passage of time, the chandelier remains in excellent original condition, with minimal signs of patina on the brass—a natural process that only enhances its vintage charm.
Two of the brass small “flowers” that go under the screws are missing (these are simply decorative washers). This is not really visible considering the size of the lamp.
The chandelier requires 10 E14 bulbs.
