Contemporary Design
For the No Cardboard Project a lightweight aluminium technology well known in aircraft and maritime construction is used to make unusual furniture. Just like cardboard the material gains its strength through the combination of actually very thin layers. This sandwich material provides a high flexural rigidity whilst being very thin, light and resistant to corrosion, qualities that make it famous for the ultralight design of aircrafts. The outcome of this project is a multifunctional piece of furniture that portraits a sense of modernity and openness. Despite its airy and open structure it bears several hundreds of kilos and is made to last. The outer appearance immediately gives the impression of cardboard which became a very popular material in recent decades beyond the field of packaging. The No Cardboard Project translates this ephemeral contemporary into a durable product. It combines the cleverness of corrugated cardboard, unveiled in its structure, with the durability and aesthetic of metal. A modern, minimalist, state of the art piece is created, which is able to mature and become an antique of the future. This version of No Cardboard is finished in a metallic lacquer common in the automotive industry. Please note that this piece is a handmade prototype.
